Travel chess sets, folding and compact
A travel chess set should fit in a bag and pack away in seconds. Our compact cases hold their pieces in an insert or compartments; most are magnetic, so you can carry on playing on the train, on holiday or at a small table.
Choosing a travel chess board
For a travel chess set, three criteria matter: how bulky it is when closed, how well the pieces stay put and how legible the board is.
| Model | Size | Special feature |
|---|---|---|
| Petit Nomade | mini, 20 cm | magnetic, coordinates, in blue or green |
| Nomade noir | 27 × 13.5 × 4 cm case | weighted, magnetic pieces, 55 mm king |
| Nomade marqueté | 28 × 14 × 4 cm case | marquetry board, 30 mm squares |
| Petit Trianon | 27 × 13.5 × 4.5 cm case | non-magnetic, 65 mm king, pyrographed decoration |
Nomade vert and Nomade ébène complete the range, with a folding case and a green insert with individual slots. The coordinates on Petit Nomade and Nomade ébène help you follow a lesson or replay a game from a book.
Folding or magnetic chess set?
Most models fold: the board closes over the pieces. The real difference lies in the magnets.
- Magnetic: the magnetised pieces hold on the board, an advantage on a train or outdoors. The whole range is gathered in the magnetic chess set collection.
- Classic: Petit Trianon has pieces that simply sit on the board, like a miniature living-room set. Its two felt-lined compartments protect the pieces.
