Original chess sets to give as gifts
An original chess set gets noticed before the first game is even played. These handmade Polish models rely on colour, carving or pyrographed decoration. Each can be given a personalised engraving to mark the occasion: a birthday, a leaving gift, the festive season.
Finding the set that suits the person
To choose an original chess set, start from the person who will receive it rather than from the set. A few ideas:
- A note of colour: Saphir, blue and light wood, or Opaline cerise, red and cream.
- For the festive season: Noël, in which each hand-carved piece takes the shape of a fir tree.
- A playful nod: Matriochka, hand-carved birch pieces in green and red, in the image of Russian nesting dolls.
- A first set: Trianon, compact, with a 31 cm open board.
- A centrepiece: the large carved sets in our luxury chess set selection.
A decorative chess set that is still a real game
A decorative chess set sits on a console or coffee table, but it is made to be played. For a memorable gift, Chambord, Diplomate bleu and Atlantique go for the large format, with a king of 100 to 120 mm. Each model includes the board and its set of pieces, which store in the case after the game.
To make it unique, add a personalised engraving on the board or the case: a name, a date or a message of up to 40 characters, for £8.90. Contact us before ordering to confirm the text and the surface.
Other ideas: a chess clock for the club player, or a Manopoulos backgammon set handmade in Greece.
