Manopoulos wooden backgammon sets
Every wooden backgammon set in this collection is handmade in Greece by the Manopoulos family, founded in Athens in 1970, whose workshop is in Thebes. The cases include 30 checkers, four dice, a doubling cube and a pair of dice cups.
Choosing your wooden backgammon set
| Model | Closed case | Finish |
|---|---|---|
| BJJ1 | 48 × 30 cm | walnut burl veneer, contrasting points |
| BUU1 | 48 × 30 cm | California walnut burl, cherry and oak points |
| BKB1 | 48 × 30 cm | American walnut, black oak playing surface |
| Mahogany BMM2 | 38 × 23 cm | mahogany veneer, medium size |
| Robusto | 48 × 26 cm | design printed on wood, laminated and varnished |
The three large veneer models form the top of the collection: this is where you will find the luxury backgammon set, with hand-laid marquetry. The more compact Mahogany finds a place easily. The Robusto, with its printed design, is the most affordable model.
Backgammon or jacquet: what is the difference?
Both games use the same board with 24 points, the same 30 checkers and the same dice. A single case is therefore enough to play either.
- Backgammon: the checkers start from positions spread across the board and the two players move in opposite directions. A lone checker can be hit: it goes onto the bar and must re-enter the game. The doubling cube lets you raise the stakes.
- Jacquet: a variant long played in France. Each player starts with all fifteen checkers stacked on a single point, and there are no hits: a single checker is enough to block a point for the opponent.
