How to choose a wooden chess set

The first thing to look at is the height of the king. It sets the scale of the whole set and points to the most natural use.

King heightUseExamples
50 to 65 mmSmall table, learning, travelVendôme, Opaline
75 to 100 mmRegular games at home or at the clubSénéchal, Saint-Germain
110 to 140 mmLarge living-room set, decorative objectMontagnard, Empereur

Think about the space it takes, too: closed, the Grand Siècle case measures 58 × 29 × 7 cm, while the Vendôme’s fits on a shelf.

To take your games with you, compact and magnetic formats are gathered in our travel chess sets.

Pyrographed, marquetry, carved: what changes

  • Pyrographed board: the decoration is burned into the wood. This is the finish of Chambord or Montagnard.
  • Marquetry board: the squares are assembled veneers, for example mahogany and sycamore on Régence No. 5.
  • Weighted pieces: more stable on the board, they suit regular play. Sénéchal, Connétable and Prélude are fitted with them.
  • Carved chess set: on Orfèvre, the royal-style pieces are fully hand-carved in sycamore maple, then inlaid with brass.

The most refined sets are gathered in the luxury chess set selection. Already have your pieces? See our chess boards on their own.
