Choosing Your Chess Board

The best chess set is the one you will want to get out often. To choose it, start with how you like to play, then compare the format, the contents and the storage.

01. A board on its own or a complete set?

A chess board is the 64-square playing surface. It can be sold on its own. A complete set includes the board and the pieces: it is the simplest choice for getting started or for giving as a gift. Always check what is included on the product page, as the photos may show the board styled with pieces.

02. At home or on the move?

At home, first choose a format that sits comfortably on your table. When traveling, a folding case with internal storage makes the set easier to carry. Magnetic sets help keep the pieces in place during play.

What you are looking for What to look at
Getting started A complete set with easily recognisable pieces
Playing at home The dimensions of the board and how it stores
Taking your set with you A compact, folding and possibly magnetic format
Improving your game Notation and a chess clock suited to your time control
Giving as a gift A complete set in a style the recipient will love

03. Matching the board and the pieces

If you are putting a set together, compare the width of the squares with the diameter of the pieces' bases. The pieces should be able to move without touching each other. A "No. 4" or "No. 5" designation is no substitute for precise dimensions, as these can vary from one maker to another.

04. Look at the storage

A folding board closes up into a case. A model with drawers leaves the playing surface free while holding the pieces. A board on its own offers a clean, minimal look, but the pieces have to be stored separately.

05. Choosing a chess clock

For casual games, a simple countdown may be enough. If you play with time added after each move, choose a model that offers a bonus or an increment. Check the modes offered on the product page.
